Sleep Cycle-App Review

Sleep Cycle is a app that is available on both the Apple Appstore, and the Google Playstore. In this review I will be reviewing specifically the IOS version, but I believe that the two versions are near identical, apart from the way that they read sleep data.

The name of the app comes from the fact that sleep is done in cycles that commonly last for 90 minutes, and it goes from REM, which is just under awake, to deep sleep. The cycles are analysed by the apps providing you with accurate sleep quality ratings.

The apps official website claims this is how the app wakes you up at the perfect time.

"How does it work?

Waking up easy is all about timing. Sleep Cycle alarm clock   tracks your sleep patterns and wakes you up during light  sleep. Waking up during light sleep feels like waking up naturally rested without an alarm clock."

There is also a handful of other information about how the sleep process happens, and what the difference between a good nights sleep, and a bad nights sleep is. Just click here to visit the website.

The standalone version of the app is free and by itself it works great, but there are some other nifty features that they only allow there 'premium' members to view, I decided to buy the one year subscription to premium so that I could work out for you if it is really worth the money.

To the left is a screenshot of the features I get as a premium customer;
Online backup, to my knowledge this is only useful if you loose or corrupt your mobile, but then again you could always back your mobile up to the cloud, it is just a nifty feature.
Sleep aid, this gives you the option of paying 'soothing' sounds when your are getting to sleep, and as soon as it is detected that you are asleep it will stop playing the music, necessary? no, but it is nice to have the option, and may help some that find it hard falling into sleep.
Sleep notes, this one is useful for analysing your sleep quality depending on different scenarios that you can define, for example if you set up your own basic ones like "got hammered", "had sex a exiting experience involving a member of the opposite sex (or the same, no judging)", and possibly a more tame one like "ate cheese late". All of your nights data will be pulled together, and the results will tell you if a certain activity will positively impact your nights sleep, or hinder it.
Wake up mood, when you wakeup you will have 3 options to choose from good, medium, and bad, this data will be put together with the other data so that you can see what affects your perception of a good nights sleep.
Heart rate, this prompts you to put your finger over the camera, and it will read the fluctuations in your heart rate so that it can analyse what mode of sleep you were in when you wakeup, and improve the next days "smart alarm".
Philips Hue, we have all heard of the lights that you can control from your phone, yeah? Now you can use them to wake you up smoothly, adjusting both light colour, and intensity. I can report that using this mode is really nice, and allows you to really wake up feeling rested.
RunKeeper, this just synchronises your data with the app, I do not use RunKeeper so I cannot comment of the effectiveness of this.

In conclusion I highly recommend you to try out the apps free mode, which is great on its own, and if you feel that it is necessary take the step up to premium.
